LIHU‘E — Despite new markings on certain beverage containers to the contrary, the county Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division said bottle caps are not accepted at HI5 redemption centers or in the Kaua‘i Recycles green drop bins.

The caps are not part of the HI5 beverage program segregated rate and cannot be adequately processed and baled by the county’s recycling contractor.

Printed phrases like “recycle bottle with cap on” should be ignored and the caps not recycled, according to a county press release.

Kaua‘i Hi5 Redemption Center locations are:

• Kilauea at 5-2723 Kuhio Hwy. behind the Anaina Hou mini-golf) on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.;

• Lihu‘e at 3460 Ahukini Road (operated by Reynolds Recycling), Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 5 p.m.;

• Kapa‘a at 962 Kipuhi Way (past the Gather Federal Credit Union in the Arzadon Industrial Center), Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.;

• Koloa at 2810 Po‘ipu Road (next to the Koloa fire station), Thursdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.;

• Kekaha across from the old Kekaha Sugar mill Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
