The organizers of the Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup event are hoping everyone who celebrates on or near the river this holiday weekend, will properly dispose of all trash.

Organizers ask that people throw away their own trash and also pick up any litter you see– even if it isn’t yours.

This year’s Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup will be Wednesday, (July 6, 2022) from 5-8pm based out of Downs Marina in Griffin Park in Pierre. Land and water-based crews will pick up litter and trash which will be disposed of by the City of Pierre.

The organizers are looking for additional boats, pontoons, canoes, kayaks, trucks, and trailers to help with the cleanup. Volunteers are asked to wear closed toed shoes and sunglasses. They’re also asked to bring work gloves and a refillable water bottle. Volunteer sign in begins at 4:30pm in Griffin Park.

Groups and businesses are welcome to participate. Trash bags will be provided, gloves will be available as needed. The volunteers are invited to a picnic supper in Griffin Park following the cleanup.

Since the Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup began in 2009, over 22 tons of trash have been collected by more than 750 volunteers.
